Gas and Electric Fail Differently
How an oven fails to heat depends on how it makes heat. An electric oven uses a bake element at the bottom and a broil element up top; when the bake element burns open it simply stops heating, and you can often see the break or a blistered spot. A gas oven relies on a bake igniter that must glow hot enough to open a safety gas valve. As that igniter ages it draws less current, the valve opens slowly or not at all, and the oven struggles to light even though the igniter still glows. Both cases are common and fixable.
The Usual Causes
- Burned-out bake element: the most common electric-oven fault.
- Weak bake igniter: the most common gas-oven fault; it glows but will not open the valve.
- Drifting temperature sensor: causes overshoot or a cold-running oven.
- Control board relay: a relay that will not close and power the element.
- Blown thermal fuse: after a self-clean cycle, a tripped high-limit fuse can cut power.
Notes by Brand
Wolf dual-fuel ovens use an electric convection cavity, so a no-heat complaint usually points to an element, a relay, or the sensor, and the oven may show a fault code. Thermador, Miele, and Gaggenau ovens surface F-series codes that flag a sensor out of range or a lock fault. Gas Viking, Dacor, and La Cornue ovens most often need a bake igniter. Monogram, Jenn-Air, and KitchenAid ovens use GE and Whirlpool control logic with F#-E# codes we can read. We confirm the reading against an independent thermometer before replacing a sensor.
Quick Reference
| What You Notice | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No heat, electric | Burned bake element | Replace the bake element |
| Slow or no light, gas | Weak bake igniter | Replace the igniter |
| Bakes wrong | Sensor drift | Replace the sensor and recalibrate |
| Dead after self-clean | Thermal fuse or relay | Replace the fuse or repair the board |
