A Sub-Zero that runs warm is most often an airflow or defrost problem, not a dead compressor. Start with the condenser coils and the evaporator fan; a clogged condenser or a stalled defrost cycle causes the majority of warm-running calls and both are modest repairs.
The first thing to check is the condenser behind the upper grille. If it is packed with dust or pet hair, the compressor cannot reject heat and the whole cabinet slowly warms despite running constantly. A thorough coil cleaning is frequently the entire fix, especially in summer and on wooded lots. This is the single most common cause we see.
If the coils are clean, the next suspects are the evaporator fan and the defrost cycle. A failed evaporator fan warms the fresh-food side while the freezer may stay cold, because air is not circulating. A stalled defrost cycle lets frost build on the evaporator until it chokes off airflow, so the unit runs but cannot cool. Both are common and well-supported repairs on a Sub-Zero.
Only after airflow and defrost are ruled out do we look at the sealed system. A refrigerator that runs constantly, cannot get cold, and has a hot compressor may have a refrigerant or compressor fault, which is a larger repair. On a premium built-in that is still usually worth doing, but we confirm the diagnosis first so you are not paying for the wrong repair.
