Start with Airflow and Defrost
A refrigerator that runs but does not cool almost always has a problem moving cold air, not making it. The compressor and refrigerant may be working perfectly while an evaporator fan sits stalled behind the rear panel or a defrost cycle has stopped, letting frost blanket the coils until air can no longer pass. Because these are the most common and least expensive causes, they are the first things a good technician checks, before ever touching the sealed system.
The Usual Causes, in Order
- Evaporator fan stalled: cold air is made but not circulated. Often the freezer still feels cold while the fresh-food side warms.
- Defrost cycle stopped: frost builds on the coils and chokes airflow. A defrost heater, thermostat, or control is usually behind it.
- Dirty condenser coils: the compressor works harder and cools less. Common in homes with pets or a nearby cooktop.
- Door gasket not sealing: warm room air leaks in continuously and the unit never catches up.
- Sealed system or compressor: less common, but a refrigerant leak or a failed compressor stops cooling entirely. This requires certified handling.

On Sub-Zero dual-compressor units the two compartments are independent, so a warm fresh-food side with a cold freezer points squarely at that side's fan or defrost. Viking and Thermador built-ins follow the same airflow-first logic. Bosch, Miele, and Liebherr units often surface a fault code that narrows the diagnosis, and Liebherr in particular uses E0, E1, and E2 sensor codes plus a temperature alarm.
