The Defrost Cycle Keeps Coils Clear
A frost-free freezer is not actually frost free; it makes frost constantly on its evaporator coils and then melts it away on a schedule. A small heater near the coils runs for a few minutes several times a day, timed by a defrost control and protected by a defrost thermostat. When any link in that chain fails, the melting stops but the frost-making does not, so ice slowly blankets the coils. Once it is thick enough to block airflow, the compartments start to warm even though the compressor is running fine.
The Usual Causes
- Failed defrost heater: the element that melts frost has burned open.
- Defrost thermostat or control: the timing device never triggers the melt cycle.
- Door or gasket issue: humid room air leaks in and frosts up whatever it touches.
- Frequent door openings: in a humid kitchen this adds moisture faster than the cycle clears it.
- Drain frozen: defrost water cannot escape and refreezes at the bottom.
Notes by Brand
Sub-Zero and Viking built-ins show defrost failures as frost on the freezer's rear panel and, in time, a warm fresh-food side. Bosch, Miele, and Liebherr units may log a code when a defrost sensor reads out of range. Monogram, Jenn-Air, KitchenAid, and True Residential refrigeration all use the same heater-thermostat-control arrangement, so the diagnosis follows the same path. We test the heater and the defrost circuit directly rather than guessing.
Quick Reference
| What You Notice | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Frost on rear panel | Defrost heater or control | Test and replace the failed part |
| Fridge warm too | Frost blocking airflow | Restore the defrost cycle |
| Ice at the bottom | Frozen defrost drain | Clear and heat-treat the drain |
| Frost near the door | Gasket leak | Replace the gasket |
