Why a Viking Oven Will Not Heat

Igniters and elements on Viking ranges and wall ovens: the causes behind a Viking oven that will not heat, and how each is diagnosed.

A Viking gas oven that will not heat almost always has a weak bake igniter. As it ages it draws less current and can no longer open the safety gas valve, so it glows but never lights. On electric and dual-fuel models, a failed bake element or control relay is the usual cause.

On a gas Viking oven, the igniter does two jobs: it glows to light the gas and it draws enough current to open the safety valve. As the igniter ages, its resistance rises and its current draw falls, until it can still glow but no longer opens the valve. The result is an oven that heats the igniter but never ignites. This is the single most common Viking oven fault, and replacing the igniter fixes it.

On electric and dual-fuel Viking ovens, the bake or broil element does the heating. A failed element often shows visible damage, a split or a burned spot, and tests open on a meter. A control relay that no longer closes can also prevent heating even when the element is good, so we test both.

Uneven heating rather than no heating usually points to the temperature sensor or the convection fan rather than the igniter or element. Because most Viking ovens are electromechanical, there is no numeric code to read; we diagnose by testing the igniter draw, the element resistance, and the sensor. Each is a discrete, replaceable part on a serviceable range.

Frequently Asked

Why Does My Viking Oven Glow but Not Light?
The bake igniter has weakened. It still glows but no longer draws enough current to open the safety gas valve, so the gas never ignites. Replacing the igniter fixes it.
How Do I Know If It Is the Igniter or the Element?
Gas ovens use an igniter; electric and dual-fuel ovens use an element. A glowing-but-not-lighting gas oven points to the igniter; a dead electric oven points to the element or relay.
Does a Viking Oven Show an Error Code When It Won't Heat?
Most Viking ovens are electromechanical and do not display a numeric code. Diagnosis is by testing the igniter draw, element resistance, and sensor.
