Viking Range Guide

Caring for pro-style Viking burners and the ProFlow convection oven, plus the routine that keeps a Viking performing for decades.

A Viking range rewards mechanical care: keep the sealed burners and caps clean, expect the oven igniter to be the usual wear part, and keep the convection oven's airflow clear. Viking is electromechanical and built to be serviced, so most issues are a single replaceable part.

Viking helped define the pro-style home range, and its heavy sealed burners are made to last. Keep the burner caps clean and dry and the ports clear, and they light reliably. When a Viking gas oven will not light, the cause is almost always the bake igniter: as it ages it draws less current and can no longer open the safety gas valve, so it glows but never ignites. It is the single most common Viking repair and a straightforward one.

The ProFlow convection oven circulates heat with a fan and relies on an accurate temperature sensor. If baking becomes uneven, the sensor has usually drifted or the convection fan has slowed, both replaceable. Keep the oven floor clear of foil, which disrupts airflow and heat distribution, and let the vents breathe.

Because Viking is largely mechanical, there is no numeric fault-code system to read; diagnosis is by symptom and measurement. That is good news for longevity: igniters, valves, elements, and sensors are all discrete parts you replace, so a fifteen-year-old Viking can be brought back to full performance. Basic care and early attention to small faults keep it there.

Frequently Asked

Why Won't My Viking Oven Light?
Almost always a weak bake igniter. As it ages it no longer draws enough current to open the safety gas valve, so it glows but never lights. Replacing the igniter fixes it.
Does Viking Use Error Codes?
Most Viking ranges are electromechanical and do not display numeric codes, so they are diagnosed by symptom and measurement. Newer electronic models may show a limited fault indicator.
Is an Old Viking Range Worth Repairing?
Yes. Viking builds heavy, serviceable ranges, and igniters, valves, and elements are replaceable wear parts, so even a fifteen-year-old range is usually worth restoring.
